April 29th will be a special day for the Supporting STEM and Space Library Telescope Project. On that day we will have a fundraiser at Waterway Christian Church at 4074 SW H Street. We have ordered 8 of the Orion StarBlast telescopes to deliver to 8 libraries as part of their lending collections. This project will allow patrons to check out a telescope for a personal experience with the night sky. Stay tuned to hear if your favorite library will be one of the 8 lucky libraries.
Supporting STEM & Space, Inc. is raising money to install telescopes into the lending collections of local libraries. These telescopes will be available for check out by any authorized patrons. They have been modified for ease of use and to help insure a positive experience by patrons. The telescopes will each include a night sky guide. At left is a possible set up in libraries. Supporting STEM & Space and Sugar Creek Astronomical Society (an amateur astronomy club in Northwest Arkansas) will adopt the telescopes for periodic maintenance. Various members of these groups will also be available as local experts for programs and star parties at the libraries.
Each telescope costs $350 to purchase, deliver, modify, and prepare for presentation to a library along with night sky guides and manual. This means your small donation today will go far to allow local families to view the night sky in their own back yards.
A small plaque will be created for each library noting telescope sponsors.
We have selected the Orion StarBlast 4.5-inch Astronomical Telescope for the libraries, along with a zoom eye piece. We provide a laminated copy of a simplified instruction manual with each scope and other supporting material. This telescope is easy to use and robust. There is a sturdy wooden base rather than the usual tripod legs. The telescope is a manageable size with a relatively large optical tube. This means that the Moon and deep sky objects will show lots of detail. It also has a large field of view to allow objects to stay in the eyepiece longer. This is a quality instrument, reviewed by a number of astronomical publications.
If you would like to donate for a specific library contact Dr. Katherine Auld at Katherine.Auld@nwa.space after you donate.
