OLLI course - Light Pollution effects more than Just Bugs

  • Oshler Lifelong Learning Institute 481 South Shiloh Drive Fayetteville, AR, 72704 United States (map)

Light pollution, the excessive and misdirected use of artificial light, has become a growing concern for everyone. This issue extends beyond the realm of stargazing, as it can have significant impacts on the natural world and the delicate balance of ecosystems including food systems. As our towns continue to expand, the problem of light pollution has escalated, affecting not only our ability to observe the night sky but also our physical and mental well-being.

One concern with light pollution is its effect on nocturnal wildlife. Many species rely on the natural cycles of day and night to guide their behavior and biological processes. Light pollution also poses a significant threat to the delicate balance of pollination. Pollinators rely on the cues of natural light cycles to guide their foraging and reproductive behaviors.

A second concern regarding light pollution is its effect on human sleep patterns. Exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythms, leading to sleep disturbances and a range of health issues.

By taking steps to mitigate the effects of light pollution, we can protect the natural environment and the species that depend on it and contribute to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
